About the role: 

You will be responsible for supporting the EPA to meet its statutory responsibilities relating to environmental public health. You will develop and oversee the delivery of expert advice and information on environmental public health matters, aligned to EPA’s strategic priorities, to prevent harm to Victorian communities and the environment from pollution and waste. 

 

In this role you will:  

  • Prepare and deliver timely and high-quality advice and technical reports in relation to chemical exposure, responding to requests to review and undertake quantitative (Tier 2) health risk assessments; prepare information sheets to support EPA’s knowledge bank on environmental public health; contribute to and prepare community fact sheets, technical reports, and briefs in relation to health risk information for specific incidents and sites.
  • Gather, analyse, and synthesise scientific data in relation to public health exposures and health impacts; identify relevant exposure metrics and use appropriate tools (statistical and/or programming) to describe levels and types of exposure and the relationships between different exposure media; prepare quantitative reports on health data analysis and propose appropriate solutions to manage health impacts.
  • Provide information on current and future environmental public health risks, issues, and opportunities that EPA needs to consider in undertaking its activities and working with partners; build strong networks and manage effective working relationships across the EPA, and with relevant environmental and health agencies and experts to support delivery of EPA’s environmental public health function.
  • Participate in the response to environmental and public health emergencies and incidents.

 

Skills and experience: 

  • A tertiary degree in science, health science, toxicology, environmental public health, or a related discipline.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience in reviewing and undertaking quantitative human health risk assessment of chemicals (Tier 2 risk assessments), and ability to identify and quantify environmental and human health risks as they relate to contaminated environments.
  • Demonstrated success in undertaking complex or technical investigations in relation to environmental public health and making recommendations for action.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use and development of appropriate statistical and/or programming tools to assess describe levels and types of exposure.
